Experiences

  • Patients appreciate the focus on fresh, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and fish.
  • Many feel healthier overall, even if unsure about direct Parkinson's benefits.
  • The diet is seen as a positive lifestyle change, not just a treatment.
  • Some believe it may slow disease progression based on available evidence.

Challenges

  • Some find it challenging to strictly avoid sugar, red meat, and processed foods.
  • Uncertainty about whether the diet directly impacts Parkinson's symptoms.
  • Lack of clear, consistent evidence on its effectiveness for Parkinson's progression.
  • Requires significant effort in meal planning and preparation.

Tips

  • Start with small changes, like adding leafy greens and cutting sugar.
  • Consult a dietitian familiar with Parkinson's for personalized advice.
  • Pair the diet with regular exercise for better overall health.
  • Focus on consistency rather than perfection in following the diet.

Reported effectiveness
The average perceived effectiveness of the treatment amongst the patient views found for this page.

To calculate the reported effectiveness for a patient view, the model first analyses whether it can be ascertained that the person writing the review has had direct experience of the treatment for themselves or a loved one. If so, it then uses sentiment analysis to rate their view from 1-5 on how effective this treatment was for them, with 1 being the least effective, and 5 the most effective.

My spouse and I started to loosely follow the MIND diet after his Dx. Homemade meals, organic where possible, LOTS of fruits and vegetables and now we pay attention to the ingredients on labels way more than we ever have before. It’s impossible to know if it’s helping, but it’s definitely not hurting. If anything, we feel great!

Then your version of pd likely starts in your GI, genitals, or surgical implant.

I highly suggest switching to the MIND Diet.

Follow the MIND diet. Get off sugar ASAP! Beef, Butter, DAIRY + sugar are HARD NO's. A well-known advocate's website has diet.

In bed I felt my partner’s Parkinson’s shakes as if I was having a fast heart beat. Noticed his hand shaking was getting worse when he was stressed at the doctors. Otherwise, changed our whole nutrition to Mediterranean eating with ingredients of around 20 different veges/fruits/seeds a day. Together with intense exercise, voice training, drugs and food he looks better than 2 years ago.

I have no idea if he is correct or not so I will refrain from judgment. But I do think his dietary recommendations are spot on. The Mediterranean diet is definitely great for health and great for neurological protection. And the foods he says to avoid, are definitely straight up garbage food that everyone should give up regardless of Parkinson’s or not.

The key here is it is only an association to risk. The studies are so conflicting on dairy and PD. There are no studies on the consumption of dairy and progression when you have PD. The Mediterranean/mind diets do show some evidence of slowing progression and they include moderate amounts of dairy. Dairy is shown to be associated with cognitive health and of course for bone health.
